A Farthinghoe View of the Vintage

What might have been a broad, solar year has instead become something far more complete. The 2025 vintage combines concentration with freshness, shaped by a hot, dry summer and a decisive shift at the end of August, when rain and cooler nights restored balance at just the right moment. The result is a vintage of both structure and finesse, with moderate alcohols, bright acidity, and a clarity of fruit that allows terroir to speak clearly.

Stylistically, 2025 sits somewhere between 2016 and 2022, though closer to the former in its restraint and precision. The wines show depth and framework, but also energy and charm, with many producers describing it as close to a “perfect” vintage. This is not a year of excess, but one of composure and control.

A Vintage To Watch

Yields, however, are significantly reduced, often by 20–40%, among the lowest seen in decades. This naturally places some pressure on pricing, though early indications suggest increases will remain measured, with release prices still comfortably below those of 2016 and 2022. Given the quality on show, this should represent compelling value.

For buyers, this is a vintage that rewards selectivity. Quality is consistently high, but the finest terroirs have excelled, particularly on the Right Bank, where Merlot has performed exceptionally well, and in the leading communes of the Left Bank, where structure and longevity are evident. This is a vintage for both the cellar and the table, offering immediate appeal alongside long-term potential.
