Burgundy 2023 marks a return to classicism – wines of wonderful typicity, purity, and balance, with a beautifully modern concentration.
Though 2023 was one of the hottest years on record, much of the heat came early, and the resulting wines stand apart from the big, solar vintages that have preceded it. Across the Côte d’Or, elegance, clarity, and terroir expression were recurring themes in our tastings.
The whites – especially from Meursault – show ripe precision, mineral tension, and stony definition without straying into the tropical. The reds are elegant, poised, and vibrant, with a ripe core of crunchy fruit and clear terroir character. Moderate alcohol and lower acidity keep everything in perfect balance.
Generous yields in 2023 meant sorting was crucial – especially for Pinot Noir – and key decisions centred on harvest timing. A September heatwave prompted many growers to pick at night or in the early morning to preserve freshness and protect both grapes and people. Large volumes led some to use less whole-bunch fermentation simply due to space constraints, which in turn highlighted the purity and aromatics of the fruit. More new oak was used, yet the sweet fruit was never overshadowed.
Ultimately, despite a season of changing conditions, the vines had everything they needed. The result is a standout Burgundy vintage defined by clarity, typicity, and perfect balance – one to drink, cellar, and celebrate.
